SIPP Pensions

The potential benefits of Self Invested Personal Pension (SIPP)

A SIPP is one of the options available to those taking a personal pension scheme. The SIPP is a "wrapper" in which investments are held until retirement (currently a minimum age of 55). Unlike other pension schemes, a SIPP offers the individual control over how the funds are invested. By coming to us for a SIPP you gain not only our administrative assistance in handling the investments, as well as our expertise in making the most of it.

For those who want more control of their pension investments, a SIPP offers a far wider range of investment choices. If you opt for a SIPP, your investments can be in equities (both UK and foreign), investment trusts, units trusts, commercial property, gilts and fixed income. This gives you an investment which you can control and benefits from all of the tax benefits of a pension.

The sheer diversity of pension investment options available with SIPPs provides you with the flexibility and opportunity for a well spread portfolio, which is common sense for long term investments. This is not something usually available with personal pensions that have been provided by an insurance company, as these have traditionally restricted the scope of funds which are available for pension investment.

SIPPs can provide this same level of flexibility when you come to retirement. For instance, you have the choice of going into drawdown, which involves taking as much as a quarter of your pension pot as a tax free cash lump sum and the remainder is used to purchase an annuity.

Like all pension plans, investment into a SIPP will not be taxed, you can in fact invest as much as you earn into a SIPP each year up to the annual limit. This also counts on any money made by the investment which is not taxed either under Income Tax or Capital Gains Tax. Also, Pension is not subjected to inheritance tax.

Potential risks to be considered

A SIPP involves personal investments and as such is not 'risk free'. Any investments held by your SIPP capital will present a risk in exactly the same way as if you invested any other capital in them.

Although current tax legislation treats 'tax wrappers' (such as SIPPs) favourably, this may change within the lifetime of the SIPP.
