Anna Gidman DipFA CertPFS
Investment Adviser & Financial Planner

Meet Anna, who has now joined the Raymond James Investment Services East Devon Branch.

After 23 years with Lloyds TSB, Anna was made redundant following the bank's decision to stop providing financial advice in their branch network.

The financial services industry carried out a review of how services are delivered in the UK, known as the Retail Distribution Review [RDR]. This has lead to changes in the way clients pay for advice and how advisers accept remuneration. In addition the minimum qualifications for financial planning and investment management were raised.

Anna spent 2011 on the bank's study program to meet this level of qualification. From this she could apply for her Statement of Professional Standing [SPS] required to continue practising financial planning after December 2012. However, despite Anna successfully passing all the required qualifications, Lloyds TSB decided that they would no longer provide financial advice from their network in October 2012.

On being made redundant Anna said she was "very disappointed", and added that this was not just for her career, but also for many of the clients that she has continued to look after. During her 23 years at the bank Anna has worked at branches in Exeter, Exmouth, Truro, Camborne, Penzance, St Thomas, Honiton, Sidmouth, Ottery St Mary and Budleigh Salterton.

With her youngest child born as recently as Christmas Day 2009, Anna has had to cope with significant pressure on family life, juggling the day to day management of her family with studying to remain in the industry she loves, especially following the disappointment of losing her job. During her interview we asked her how she felt about what had happened to her over the last 2 years. Anna's reply "I am looking to broaden my horizons; this is an opportunity for an upward career move" was one of the factors that made us feel that Anna was someone who could fit the Raymond James Wealth Management role.

Anna has joined as an Investment Adviser and Financial Planner and has started to study to become a Chartered Wealth Manager. This will require Anna to study and pass three more exams [1 now done, 2 to go] to further increase her qualifications.

Anna is quite philosophical about her career change, "I thought that I was quite knowledgeable, but found that I need to know more." She added thoughtfully "One of the speakers at last year's Raymond James Conference said it all, 'You don't know - what you don't know!'".

She added, "Joining Raymond James Investment Services will allow me to provide holistic financial planning using investment from the whole of the market, and in time I shall be able to advise on stocks and share portfolios as well. I dislike not being able to offer what clients really need".
